BLACK TRANS FUTURES

BLACK TRANS FUTURES

In the wake of hate legislation against trans people, we search for what a beautiful future looks like in Alabama.

Meet The Knights & Orchids Society (TKO). One of the only Black, trans-led healthcare organizations in the country.

The ACLU of Alabama brought TKO members together to reflect on what it means to keep us safe, who we show up for, and how we make the road to a Black Trans Future.

We Make The Road By Walking

as explained by TKO Founder and Director, Quentin Bell

“Trans folks need everything you need.

We need leadership training, housing support, financial support, utility support, job training, education, access to care, affirming doctors.

Focusing on providing this to Trans folx, in turn, will benefit everyone.”

Passing The Torch

as explained by TC Caldwell and Josh Baker, both have led the TKO Youth Ambassadors Program.

Who is our community?

“The breadcrumbs. One of my favorite stories is when Jesus fed the multitudes. [But] nobody ever talks about how after he fed them, he had [the disciples] clean up, and when they were asking, “do you want us to get like these crumbs and stuff?” He said, “yeah, that too. put 'em into baskets….” We [at TKO] get the breadcrumbs.

We get the ones that the churches have forgotten, [the] organizations have forgotten. People like me who don't quite fit in the church and don't quite fit in a traditional organization.

The bread crumbs are my people.”

- TC Caldwell

If we prioritize Black Trans Futures today,
what should we see in 10 years?

Think of a headline you’d want to see in a newspaper 10 years from now.
We’ll display these responses across social and a live installation.

A Black Trans Future
is a liberated future
free of harm
full of love &
forever beautiful
