Steady Hands:

Skill-Building for Our People’s Healing

As our anniversary approaches next month, September reminded us that even after 13 years of showing up, organizing, and providing direct care in the Black queer South, we can never stop sharpening our tools, steadying our hands to care for our people. Growth is how we love. So this month, we leaned into growth:

We trained up. Our FAITH team joined the Alabama Department of Public Health for a free testing training, ensuring our outreach continues to draw from the latest practices and knowledge.

We held space for crisis response. Through the Council on Substance Abuse’s (COSA) inaugural “R U OK Day,” we received QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training and gathered community resources to share with our clients and patrons.

We showed up at the campus frontlines. For the second consecutive year, our FAITH team attended Alabama State University’s “Are U Good? Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Workshop,” distributing 40 safer sex kits, info on our resources, and swag sponsored by Avita Pharmacy.

September was a reminder that our collective liberation calls us to keep honing our skills, sharpening our strategies, and expanding our capacity to protect and nurture our people.
