Care Before the Crisis:

Suicide Prevention Begins with Support

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and at TKO, we know prevention isn't only a crisis response. It can start much earlier with a conversation, a safe space to land, and affirming care.

This month’s first Chat + Chew opened the awkward conversation about suicide: how we ask, how we listen, and how we make space for honest talks about life, death, autonomy, dignity, and what someone may be carrying. Our second Chat + Chew turned toward self-care — September is also Self-Care Month — exploring how we prioritize our own needs without guilt.

That work is woven into TKO’s everyday services, too. Peer support, emergency assistance, affirming medical care, and sexual health outreach all help address the material and emotional needs that can make life feel more manageable. At September’s First Saturdays, that meant bringing sexual health kits and toys directly to the party — meeting people right where they were.

September reminded us that suicide prevention and self-care aren't separate conversations. When people have their needs met, their autonomy respected, their bodies cared for, and their existence affirmed, they have more room to breathe, and sometimes, more reason to imagine what comes next.
