We Keep Us Safe:
Meeting Our People Where They Are
We started April in remembrance and in practice. On April 1, we honored Kaitoria “Kai” Bankz with a memorial gathering, marking one year since she was taken from us. Kai was known for meeting people where they are, making folks feel seen, and helping lower their guards without ever compromising trust. That’s the standard we carry forward in her memory.
As Faith Fluker of the Alabama Youth Activist Alliance reminded us during our April 7 Chat + Chew, this work isn’t just about meeting people where they are — “it’s about meeting people where they are safe.”
That’s how TKO’s FAITH Team moved all month: pulling up to Vikkasha’s First Saturdays LGBTQ+ Night at MGM Hookah Lounge along with the Yellowhammer Fund’s bus, which provided diapers, food and safer sex kits; showing up for students at Alabama State University; and celebrating expanded care with Five Horizons Health Services. From free testing to H.O.E. (Healthy Orgasms for Everyone) bags, all that we do abides by one truth: care only works when folks feels safe enough to seek and receive it.
