May reminded us of something we already know deep in our bones: we all we got, and all we need. Because of that, we move together not just in struggle but in celebration.

Across Alabama, Black trans and queer organizations kept showing up for each other all month — sharing resources, filling gaps, celebrating wins, and carrying the weight of this work together.

That spirit was on full display at TAKE Resource Center’s 13th Anniversary Gala in Birmingham on April 28. We kicked off May with new titles to our name, from comrades we cherish. TKO Society was honored to receive TAKE’s Sharyn Grayson Game Changer Award, with our formidable Executive Director TC Caldwell taking home the Bre Rivera Shining Star Award. The Yellowhammer Pleasure Party was also an evening of collective reclamation of our bodies, our sexual freedom, and the joys pleasure brings.

More than recognition and beyond a fun night out, these events were reminders that our movements are deeply connected — Black, Southern, community-rooted, and committed to freeing and caring for our people.
